Historic Winstone Stables
The stables site was built in 1882 to house the more than 200 Clydesdale horses of the Winstone carting business. The building has two gabled ended halls, which qualified it as a double basilica and is possibly unique in equine architectural history. With timber-frame construction, masonry base and vertical corrugated iron sheeting, it is one of the oldest surviving industrial buildings in New Zealand.
It has a Category 1 Historic Places Trust rating.

The buildings adaptive reuse required a full conservation and heritage report and assessment. This informed strategies on its restoration which included inserting contemporary services and fitout elements into an existing shell with replacement of many historic component parts using traditional techniques combined with modern technologies.

The new buildings around the stables known as Site 3, have exposed steel frames in deference to the timber used on the stable building and integrate specific historical touches such as planter boxes referencing horse troughs.
